Org charts from Google Sheets, kept up to date
Rowtree draws your org chart from the sheet you already keep: who reports to whom, dotted lines, open roles, photos and departments. Change the sheet and the chart follows, in the add-on and in the Slides decks and Docs you made with it.

What it does
From your sheet
One row per person. Reports to by name, email or employee ID. Rowtree picks the columns from your headers; change any.
Dotted lines and open roles
Dashed lines to dotted-line managers, as many as you need. Open roles get a dashed card with their title.
Your order
Order direct reports with an Order column, or by sheet order, name or title. Managers can go first.
Photos and colors
Photo links from the sheet (Drive, Dropbox or any web link), or initials. Department colors with a legend.
Nobody drops off
A manager who isn't in the sheet, two people with one name, a reporting loop: each is listed with its row, and the person is still drawn.
Show what you need
Start from any manager, limit the levels, pick departments, fold a team, hide open roles. Top down or left to right.
PNG, SVG, PDF
In every plan and in the trial. PDF on Letter, A4, Tabloid, A3 or the chart's own size. Split by team into pages.
Slides and Docs that update
A deck with one chart per slide, or a Doc. Later, Update from sheet redraws the chart in that same file.
How to make an org chart in Google Sheets
Put one person on each row with their Name and who they Report to. Add any of Job title, Department, Photo URL, Dotted line to, Order, Status (Open, Vacant or TBH for open roles), Email, Employee ID and Location. Then open Extensions > Rowtree > Open org chart. Starting from scratch? Add a sample tab gives you a filled-in org chart template to copy.
Org charts in Google Slides and Docs that update
On the Export tab, New deck makes a Google Slides presentation with the chart; Split into pages by team puts each team on its own slide, with "continued on page N" on the cards that carry on. New Doc makes a landscape Google Doc. Next month, edit the sheet and click Update from sheet (or Extensions > Rowtree > Update charts in Slides and Docs): the chart is redrawn inside the same file and your own slides stay as they are.

Privacy
- Rowtree asks only for the spreadsheet you open it in, and for the files it creates for you (the decks, Docs and exports it makes). It cannot see your other files.
- The sheet is read inside Google Apps Script under your account and the chart is drawn in your browser. Names, titles and photos are never sent to Great Work.
- Photo links are downloaded by Google's servers so they can be drawn, and aren't kept.
- To put a chart into Slides or Docs, the picture is uploaded to your Drive as a temporary file and deleted straight after the insert.
- Chart settings and the list of decks and Docs made from a spreadsheet are stored with that spreadsheet, so collaborators who use Rowtree there see them.
- Great Work's licensing server sees your Google account email, the product and how many charts you exported during the trial. Full policy: addons.greatwork.company/privacy.
Questions
Can someone report to two managers?
Yes. Put the main manager in Reports to and the others in Dotted line to, separated by semicolons. They're drawn as dashed lines.
Can I make an org chart from an Excel file?
Yes. Open or import the file in Google Sheets (File > Import), then open Rowtree on it.
Our org is big. Will it still be readable?
Teams without managers below them stack in columns, you can start from any manager, show only some levels or departments, and split exports into one page or slide per team. Rowtree draws up to 5,000 people at once.
Does it work for my whole team?
Each person who edits charts needs a plan. The Team plan covers everyone at your company email domain for one price.
