Split a Google Sheet into tabs or files by column value
Rowsplit gives every region, sales rep, client or class its own tab or its own spreadsheet, shares each one with the right people, and refreshes them when the data changes.

What it does
One output per value. Tick two or three columns for one per combination, or split into blocks of N rows.
New tabs in the same spreadsheet, one new spreadsheet with a tab per value, or a separate spreadsheet per value in a folder you choose.
Share each spreadsheet with the emails in its rows or from a lookup tab. Google sends its usual share email with your message.
Run it again or schedule it daily, weekly or monthly. The same tabs and files are updated, so links keep working.
Header rows, number formats, dates, colors, bold, column widths and the frozen header come along.
See every tab or file and its row count before anything is written. Previews are free.
How to split a sheet by column value
- Install Rowsplit, then open your spreadsheet and choose Extensions, Rowsplit, Open Rowsplit.
- Click New split, choose the tab and the column to split by (for example Region or Rep).
- Choose where the results go: tabs here, one new spreadsheet, or a spreadsheet per value.
- Click Preview to check the list, then Save and run. Click Run now whenever the data changes, or set a schedule.
Built to avoid the usual problems
- File names are trimmed, so there is never a stray space at the end of a file name.
- Codes like 00123, the word TRUE, and text that starts with "=" are copied exactly as text.
- "East", "east" and "East " land in one group unless you ask to keep them apart.
- If one file can't be saved or shared (Drive full, sharing blocked by your admin), you get a plain message for that file and the rest still finish.
- Big splits continue in batches on their own instead of failing at Google's six-minute limit.
- Your own tabs are never overwritten. If a tab name is taken, Rowsplit adds (2).

Privacy and permissions
Rowsplit works inside Google. It reads only the spreadsheet you open it in, and creates new spreadsheets with Google's per-file permission: it can open the files it made and a folder you pick, never anything else in your Drive. Cell data goes straight from Google Sheets to Google Drive and never passes through our servers. We receive only your Google account email, to check your plan. Sharing happens only when you turn it on, with the people listed in your own data. Privacy policy · Terms
Questions
Does it change my original data?
No. The source tab is only read. Rowsplit writes to the tabs and files it creates, plus an optional index tab.
What happens when I run it again?
The same tabs and files are rewritten with the current rows. New values get new outputs. Outputs for values that no longer appear are removed (files go to trash, recoverable for 30 days), or kept if you turn that off.
Can I keep formulas?
Rowsplit copies values and formatting, which keeps each output correct on its own. Formulas that point at other rows would break once the rows are split.
How many groups can it make?
Up to 200 tabs or files per split, and up to 25 people per shared file.
