Match two lists in Google Sheets when the names don't match exactly.

Fuzzwell is a fuzzy VLOOKUP for whole tables. It pairs each row of one list with the right row of the other, even when one says "The Acme Widgets, Inc." and the other "ACME WIDGETS LLC", then brings over the columns you pick with a score and a match status. Borderline pairs go to a review tab where you accept or reject them, and every re-run remembers your decisions.

What it does

Company names

Drops Inc, LLC, Ltd, Corp, GmbH and "The", ignores punctuation and accents, and treats "&" as "and". The Acme Widgets, Inc. finds ACME WIDGETS LLC.

People's names

"Smith, Robert" or "Robert Smith", initials like "R. Smith", and nicknames: Bob is Robert, Liz is Elizabeth, Bill is William.

Addresses

St and Street, N and North, Apt, Suite and # are the same. A different house number or ZIP keeps two addresses apart.

Emails, websites, phones

Case, +tags and Gmail dots don't matter; https://www.acme.com/about is acme.com; (214) 555-0100 is +1 214.555.0100.

Several columns at once

Company plus contact plus email, each with a weight, combined into one score. Mark a column "must match" for hard rules like the same state.

Generic text too

Word-by-word Jaro-Winkler for typos and word order, token set ratio for extra words, and trigram overlap for spelling variants.

See every match before you trust it

The Fuzzwell sidebar previewing the first rows: each list A row with its best list B match, a score, and a Match or Review label.

A review loop that sticks

The Fuzzwell review tab: rows to review with their candidates side by side, a Decision dropdown with Accept chosen on one row, scores, and the list A and list B values.

The Fuzzwell review tab lists every borderline row with up to five candidates side by side. Pick Accept or Reject in the Decision column and press Apply: the results update without a new run. Decisions are saved by the content of the two rows, so they survive sorting, new rows and next month's re-run.

Built for big lists

Fuzzwell matching a 48,210-row list against a 48,159-row list, with a progress bar at 31,050 rows and about two minutes left.

Fuzzwell indexes the second list so each row is only compared with likely candidates, then runs in steps that stay inside Google's time limits. Two lists of 50,000 rows typically finish in a few minutes. Close the sidebar mid-run and press Resume later; nothing is lost and it doesn't count as a second run.

Questions

How do I open it?

In a Sheet: Extensions > Fuzzwell > Match two lists.

Can the two lists be in different files?

They need to be in the same spreadsheet: Fuzzwell only has access to the file it's opened in. Copy or import the other list into a tab first. Two columns on the same tab work too.

What counts as a run?

Each time you press Run matching. A big run that continues over several steps counts once. Previews and Apply review decisions are free.

Where do the results go?

Into new columns next to list A (Fuzzwell status, Fuzzwell score, List B row, then the columns you picked), or onto a new tab if you prefer. A re-run writes over its own columns.

What tabs does it add?

Fuzzwell review (the rows to check), and two hidden tabs: Fuzzwell work (progress of a run) and Fuzzwell decisions (your accepts and rejects). "All candidates" mode adds Fuzzwell all matches.
