Renamewell

Rename hundreds of Google Drive files at once.

Pick the files in Google's own file picker, stack the rules you need, and check every new name before anything changes. Duplicate names are caught first, big folders run without a batch cap, and the last run can be undone. Renamewell only ever sees the files you pick.

Email us to get Renamewell See pricing Renamewell in Google Sheets: four stacked rules (a regular expression that turns IMG_4012 into Lisbon, the date the photo was taken at the start, a three-digit number at the end, lower-case extension) and the full preview tab listing every current and new name, like IMG_4012.JPG becoming 2026-06-12 Lisbon 001.jpg.

What it does

Rules that stack

Find and replace (with regular expressions), prefix and suffix, insert at a position, numbering, change case, remove characters, trim spaces, extensions. Each works on the result of the one above.

Dates in the name

The date a photo was taken, or the date a file was modified or created, in your format: 2026-07-04 Beach 001.jpg.

A preview that keeps up

Every old and new name updates as you type. Open the whole list in a sheet tab and type any name by hand, then rename from the tab.

Duplicates caught first

Two files that would share a name in one folder are flagged. Skip them, number them (2), (3), or allow them.

No batch cap

Hundreds or thousands of files run in short batches with a progress bar. Stop, close the sidebar, continue later.

Undo and a log

Undo the last run and every file gets its old name back. Each run's old and new names are logged, with a CSV copy in your Drive in one click.

Pick a whole folder with Ctrl+A

Click Choose files, open the folder in Google's picker, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) and Select. Pick from more folders, Shared drives or files shared with you, and they're added to the same list. Picking a folder by itself shares only its name with an add-on, so Renamewell offers a button that opens the picker inside it.

The Renamewell sidebar after picking: 18 files and 1 folder added, the file list, and a yellow note offering to select the files inside the picked Sintra day trip folder.

Duplicate names, caught before they happen

Without a number, three photos from the same day would all become "2026-06-12 Lisbon.jpg". Renamewell flags each clash in the folder, names the file it collides with, and leaves those files alone unless you choose otherwise.

The preview with 6 files to rename and 12 duplicates flagged in red, each saying which file already gets that name, and the preview tab marking them Skip: duplicate name.

Rename, then undo if you change your mind

Renamed 18 files, the run listed under Past runs with buttons to undo the last run and save the log as a CSV in Drive.

Undo gives each file of the last run its old name back. A file someone renamed again since is left as it is and listed. Undo works run by run, newest first, and it's free, also after the trial.

Undo finished: 18 files have their old name back.

Questions

How do I start?

Open any Google Sheet (a new one is fine): Extensions > Renamewell > Rename Drive files. Click Choose files in Google Drive, open a folder, press Ctrl+A, then add a rule and watch the preview.

Why does it run in Google Sheets?

The spreadsheet holds your file list and the log of every run, which is what makes the preview tab, undo and the CSV possible without giving anyone access to your whole Drive.

Can it rename files in subfolders?

Yes, once you select them: open each subfolder in the picker and press Ctrl+A. Every pick is added to the same list, and numbering can start again in each folder.

Can it check against files I didn't pick?

No. Google only shows the add-on the files you select, so a clash with an unpicked file in the same folder can't be seen. Drive allows two files with the same name, so nothing breaks.

Does it work in Shared drives?

Yes, for files you're allowed to edit. Files you can only view are listed and skipped.
